Hydrogen Research at SwRI

Overview

Date Recorded: Wednesday, December 15, 2021

Summary

Hydrogen is a staple in many chemical processes and has been used in this manner for decades. Use of hydrogen as an energy source and carrier has gained popularity as a mechanism to decarbonize the economy. “Clean” hydrogen can be generated from renewable energy or from traditional petroleum based methods that capture the generated carbon. As the demand grows for low-carbon hydrogen, so does the need for improved, energy-efficient, and scalable hydrogen technologies. Southwest Research Institute is at the forefront of advancing hydrogen technology through research and development along the entire hydrogen value chain, including generation, storage, transport, and conversion to power. Our multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists collaborates to address the key obstacles and challenges that limit the viability of hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuels. Some of these challenges faced by the hydrogen technology developers and users include achieving material and turbo-machinery compatibility, energy-efficient and economical scalability for hydrogen production and energy conversion, and operational safety throughout the value chain. This webinar presents some of these major challenges and SwRI’s role in addressing them.
